Modular construction is taking the events industry by storm. By harnessing the precision and efficiency of off-site production, modular construction has the potential to deliver bespoke, flexible solutions for event infrastructures on a scale never seen before. This method involves constructing individual sections or modules of a larger structure off-site, which are then transported and assembled on-site, thereby facilitating quicker turnaround times and reduced disruption at event locations.

Modular Construction: A Game-Changer:

The benefits of modular construction are manifold: speed, flexibility, customization, cost-efficiency, and sustainability, among others. Speed is especially crucial in the event industry. Traditional on-site construction processes are weather-dependent and can often result in project delays. In contrast, modular construction in a controlled factory environment minimizes weather-related delays, enabling strict adherence to event timelines.

With the urgent global need for sustainability, the events industry is undergoing a significant transformation. Modular construction uses fewer materials, generates less waste, and requires less energy to heat and cool than traditional methods, thereby promoting green event organization.

One of the most iconic applications of modular construction in the event industry is the construction of the ‘Barclaycard Presents British Summer Time Hyde Park’ event site in London. A modular approach was implemented to erect temporary structures such as stages, food stalls, VIP areas, and toilet facilities. The event site was assembled and disassembled efficiently for the annual festival, dramatically reducing the site’s impact on the park’s grounds and its overall carbon footprint.

Another notable example is the Esports Stadium Arlington, Texas – the largest esports facility in North America. The stadium was built using modular construction techniques, enabling quick set-up and break-down for various events. The 100,000 square-foot facility can accommodate an array of layout configurations, reflecting the adaptability inherent in modular construction.

In the sports world, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic) showcased modular construction’s potential on a grand scale. The Olympic Aquatics Centre and the Ariake Gymnastics Centre were built using prefabricated modules, ensuring minimal environmental impact and quicker construction times.

Another striking instance was the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where prefabricated modules were used to create a spectacular 6-room hotel called “The Anywhere Hotel”. This offered festivalgoers a luxurious, immersive experience and marked a radical shift in how event accommodations can be imagined and realized.

Finally, RÖDER created the tent infrastructure for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, in 2017. RÖDER’s impressive design and implementation of an extensive event space was instrumental in the success of this event, catering to thousands of spectators and athletes alike. The project required unique specifications due to the challenging environmental conditions of the Alpine region. RÖDER rose to the occasion by providing a customized solution through its various product lines. The solution involved setting up multiple structures, such as the main hospitality tent, VIP lounges, press and media centers, athletes’ area, and a catering space for visitors.

Modular Construction: Future Perspectives:

In the face of ever-evolving event formats and environmental challenges, modular construction is carving out a new path in the events industry. With the global modular construction market projected to reach USD 157.19 Billion by 2026, its impact on the event industry will likely grow in tandem.

Event organizers are constantly seeking innovative, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solutions to create memorable experiences. To this end, modular construction is no longer just an option but an integral part of event planning and execution.

Modular construction’s popularity is gaining momentum in the events industry, as evident from the grandeur of international festivals, sports events, and concerts. However, the journey is just beginning, and the possibilities are as vast as the imagination of the architects, designers, and event organizers harnessing this transformative construction method.

In conclusion, the future of event planning and management is looking greener, more sustainable, and efficient, thanks to modular construction. With its ability to combine sustainability, speed, and customization, this method is set to revolutionize the event industry in unimaginable ways.
